Mobile tagging can connect traditional media to electronic media making even direct mail truly interactive.
Mobile tagging is the process of providing data on mobile devices, commonly through the use of data (such as a URL) encoded in a two-dimensional barcode, meant to be read and captured using a camera phone. The most common of these mobile tags are QR codes, pictured here. The are several others including Datamatrix, BeeTags, Shortcodes, and most recently Microsoft Tag.
What is a QR code? This unique bar code (known as a QR code) enables customers — and potential customers — to instantly learn more about a business by visiting a mobile version of the business on any supported SmartPhone.
QR codes were initially used for tracking parts in vehicle manufacturing, but QR Codes are now used in a much broader context, including both commercial-tracking applications and convenience-oriented applications aimed at mobile-phone users (known as mobile tagging).
Moblie tags may appear in magazines, on signs, buses, business cards, or just about any object for which users might need information. Users with a camera phone equipped with the correct reader application can scan the image of the QR code causing the phone’s browser to launch and redirect to the programmed web site. There are many applications available for use on SmartPhones. The ones I prefer for my iPhone are NeoReader and Scanlife.
